De eerste stap richting een duurzamere toekomst waar overbodige consumptie een minder centrale rol speelt begint bij een gesprek rondom textiel en stof. Het doel van deze workshop is daarom het leren van de basis technieken van breien: opzetten, zowel recht- als averecht breien en afkanten. Deze technieken zullen gepersonaliseerd worden rondom de behoeftes van elke deelnemer. Voor de meer ervaren breiers zullen we de basics van kleurenwerk en kabelpatronen introduceren, om zo nog interessantere en uniekere texturen aan breiwerken toe te voegen.

Tessa Roy is een professionele textielkunstenaar en grafisch ontwerper die momenteel onderzoek doet naar hoe ambacht consumptieprocessen kan vervormen en een uitweg kan bieden uit de onderdrukkende krachten van laatstadiumkapitalisme. De projecten van Tess nemen de vorm aan van interactieve workshops, data-visualisatie d.m.v. textiel, en het proces van vallen en opstaan, oftewel “happy accidents”. Momenteel is Tess deel van de het Master programma “Experimental Publishing” aan het Piet Zwart Instituut te Rotterdam.

Yarn and Resistance with Tessa Roy

The first steps towards a more sustainable and less consumption centered future starts with the a conversation around textile and fibers. In parallel, the aim for this workshop is to teach the first main techniques of knitting: Casting-on, knitting, purling, and binding-off. We will also identify specific technique modifications for each participants' needs. For more advanced knitters, we will introduce notions of increasing and decreasing, color work and cables as a way to add interesting and unique textures to knitted pieces. 

Tessa Roy is a fiber artist and graphic designer currently working on themes of Craft as a way to escape and resist the late stage capitalist machine and reshape consumptions processes. Her practice is centered around conversational workshops, data visualisation through textile, trial and errors and happy accidents. She is currently part of the „Experimental Publishing“ Master Program at Piet Zwart Institute (Rotterdam, NL).
