Performance-sauna avond - 'Monstrosity and Systems of Preservation

Initiated in 2023 and situated in the harbor-city of Rotterdam, Monstrosity and Systems of Preservation explores Dutch colonial history, with a specific focus on the colonisation of Brazil. Drawing links between documents from the municipal archive (Rotterdam Stadsarchief), colonial systems of violence and extraction, as well as personal frustrations, the work identifies patterns of dehumanization.

Jô's research critically examines how processes of dehumanization have historically been used by European leaders to mobilize civilians against scapegoats on a false premise of moral or racial superiority. They use situated archival research, intallation, personal reflection and a performance lecture, to denounce such processes.

On the 9th of October, a monster will be conjured to unravel the question: What would be of monstrosity without its systems of preservation?

Jô Amorim Páscoa Borher is a Brazilian muldisciplinary artist, curator and researcher based in Rotterdam. Currently, they are interested in visual cultures and symbolic anthropology. Their practice has been revolving around the study of systems of representation, their relation to societal structures and their impact on lived experience.

Common Bread Sauna
