Puppetry Research Camp Dag 3

*English below*

Artists Alexander Brouwer, Lisa Zakharova and Marieke Steinare studying the non-human life on the island, and enact it through puppetry. One of their projects is organizing this puppetry researchcamp on 9th, 16th and 23rd of May. If you would like to join, book your spot here. The program is free but we expect commitment to three Saturdays.

What stories can exist on a smaller scale? On one tree, or underneath one rock? Which stories can we find on a bigger scale? A whole island, or the Maas river.

Insects live in much faster world than us, plants the opposite, they move so slowly, that they seem invisible to us. So, then what stories happen in plant time? The world around us hums on many levels. What will happen to us when we try to embody these stories?

During three Saturdays we will study the environment around us, look for stories and find characters for ourselves. Make the characters into puppets - experimenting with material and shape, paper, foam, papiermache or found material. And then bring them to life! Study puppetry and performance techniques, imagine how your character can move, why and how they interact with each other. In the end you will make an experimental play where puppetry embodies multiple forms of life.

As artists and educators we made a program for you and will provide you with guidance and tools for artistic research but it is going to be up to you what you discover and what you make. We believe that knowledge comes with doing, trying and playing. So, we invite you to join our Puppetry Research Club and discover what we can find out together!

Program.

Day 1:

Studying and following species, or pieces of ecosystems on the island, practicing noticing. Once you find something curious, we will map this area, looking for stories and characters that exist there. We will discuss our findings, and sketch them out - on paper but also with movement and material.

Day2:

Who or what are you going to bring to life? What sort of character is it? What will it be made of? Together with Marieke, we’ll focus on making the puppets. We’ll work with fabric, foam rubber, super tape or found materials. And we’ll explore techniques to bring them to life. We’ll also start developing an idea for the performance.

Day3:

How does your puppet move? How do we show that it thinks, breathes and lives? Alexander will teach you the techniques to transform your puppet from a toy to a living being with behaviors and intelligence.

To the audience, it’s magic, but you will learn the mechanics behind it. Alexander will direct a performance with you where all our characters take centre stage. And of course, we’re going to enact it. We’ll finish with a real performance for a small audience, on the island.

This program is a part of Buitenplaats Brienenoord artistic research direction of 2026. As a zoöp, we aim our research this year to study, map, interact and enact the ecosystem around us. We believe that it gives us tools to interact with the world in a more response-able and attentive ways.

Whati s a zoöp? Read here.
