What happens at an end of a practice? What traces does it leave behind, and what relationships fade once it is no longer there? Up until last year, one last professional fisherman still worked on the Maas in Rotterdam. With him passing away, the entire profession disappeared from the city, ending a practice that carries knowledge about river ecosystems.
Anastasia Eggers has been attempting to archive the traces of this practice for the past year, engaging with the evolution of river fisheries in the city and the ways in which we build reciprocal relationships with rivers through them.
On Saturday July 11, you are invited to get an insight into this research and collectively unfold fishing nets that are no longer allowed to enter the water in Rotterdam, activating them one last time. As a gesture of bidding farewell to the fishing profession in Rotterdam, the 100 meter long net will be carried above the surface of the water on the perimeter of the Brienenoord island, remembering its history as a salmon fishing island.
The dinner following the walk, prepared together with Sarah Blake from Swamp, will reflect on the sensory connection to the river through fisheries, its loss and transformation.
