Speaking of the Speechless

In this show, Buitenplaats Brienenoord hosts 5 recent graduates of local art schools, who have, all in their own way, shown a remarkable sensitivity towards their surroundings. These more-than-human worlds cannot speak but can be spoken of through material forms.  Collectively these various bodies of work, including sculptures, photography, textile and sound installations, mediate between landscapes and humans. This new generation of artists help us to tune our senses to the languages of colours, meandering bodies of water and species that emerge from between the concrete. At Buitenplaats Brienenoord these pieces find new conversing partners in the omnipresent entities that make up the island.

Presenting Emma Kibel’s installation over water under land.  A landscape inquiry into the evolving grounds of the Hedwigepolder, a depoldered site. Processes are not only theorised but materially encountered.  This work is concerned with nuance, the space between the industrial structures and natural processes, between what lies above and beneath the ground and between traditional knowledge and future imaginaries.

With Ingredients of the Maas, Remco van Zoeren offers a poetic translation of his research into pollution of the Maas river. Combining hard and softer forms of knowledge Zoeren urges us to reflect on pressing issues we are facing concerning the way we coexist with the river.  As we watch pieces of textile move through polluted waters, it’s colour changes, infusing data sets in a sensory-provoking design. We are left to wonder what has happened to the health of the Maas.

Sandra Liliana Cueva Cortez’s Weaving Bridges, Color Living System explores how colour can become a living bridge between ancestral knowledge, landscape and future development. Rooted in the Andean landscape of Chinchero, Peru, the work investigates colour not simply as a visual quality, but as a form of ecological and cultural knowledge. The work asks: How can we reconnect with the landscape not as a resource, but as a teacher?

Fionnuala Bloem Doran will install a living altar. It slowly grows, evolves and ferments. Like gathering around a fire, we gather with the sound. Alchemising rest through resonance.

Linde Dibbelink offers Tussen kruid en beton, a contemporary ceremony that reveals the great diversity of natural plant life within the city. Through observing plants, documenting them in prints, and collecting stories, the project gathers both ecological and cultural information from the urban landscape. It is translated into a mapping of the city, placing the plants at the centre. On Sunday 4th of October between 14:00 and 16:00, Dibbelink will involve our surroundings in her work through a foraging walk and printmaking workshop where participants will collectively gather a new mapping of the Brienenoord island.
