In de Turkse traditie worden de doden rechtstreeks teruggegeven aan de aarde — geen kist, alleen een doek en grond. Dit jaar werden Irems oma en oom aan die aarde in Turkije toevertrouwd, terwijl zij achterbleef op de grond van Rotterdam, de aarde waarop ze volwassen is geworden.

Toprak zet een levend lichaam op de aarde en vraagt: wie mag waar begraven worden? Van wie is deze grond? Tussen scherpe, atletische hiphop en stillere, ingekeerde bewegingen toont het een lichaam dat tegelijk bij twee gronden hoort, rouwend om de grond die het niet kan bereiken. Buiten, op gras langs de rivier, wordt een Turkse vraag geplant in Nederlandse grond.

Irem is hiphop-freestyledanser en beginnend performancemaker in Rotterdam. Op haar achttiende kwam ze uit Turkije en vond ze haar vrijheid in freestyle: de cyphers, jams en battles. Tegenwoordig danst ze met haar crew bij Hype and Hope Dojo. Haar werk draait om muzikaliteit, presence, rauwe emotie en de dualiteit van verandering, en ze maakt graag kwetsbare, eerlijke stukken. In april 2026 ging haar eerste solo Arriving & Becoming in première. Toprak is haar tweede, rond rouw en erfenis.

In Turkish tradition the dead are returned straight to the soil, no coffin, only cloth and earth. This year Irem's grandmother and uncle were given to that ground in Turkey, while she remained on the ground of Rotterdam, the earth that has held her whole becoming.

Toprak places a living body on the earth and asks: who is allowed to be buried where? Whose ground is this? Moving between sharp, athletic hip hop and quieter, inward gesture, it performs a body that belongs to two grounds at once, grieving the one it cannot reach. Outdoors, on grass beside the river, a Turkish question is planted in Dutch soil.

Irem is a hip hop freestyle dancer and emerging performance maker in Rotterdam. She came from Turkey at eighteen and found freedom in freestyle: the cyphers, jams and battles. Today she dances with her crew at Hype and Hope Dojo. Her work lives on musicality, presence, raw emotion and the duality of change, and she is drawn to vulnerable, honest pieces. In April 2026 she premiered her first solo, Arriving & Becoming. Toprak is her second, built around grief and inheritance.
